Royal Marines and Paras?
Hi,
I want to join either the Royal Marines or Paras as an officer. I enjoy boxing, running, wilderness survival etc.
From the media coverage, i understand the Royal Marines are great, but are they as good on dry land as paras, as they specialise in amphibious assaults, and maritime warfare. So they specialise in many diferent areas, (often water based) are they as good on dry land?
I want to know the main differences between the two, and what each one is better at than the other.
I dont mind the sea, i am an ok swimmer, and i dont know if this will set me back for RM. Are the people who join them generally good swimmers, enjoy water etc.?
I am not 100% which to join after University, but i am swaying torwards paras, as they are land based. I want to join the better land based soldiers, so any advide would be great.

I am a Royal Marines Commando (non commissioned) so obviously my comments are bias. Of course the Royal marines are Commandos which not only makes training 8 weeks longer than Para training, but that training is exceptionally difficult and the Commando course is considered the hardest infantry course in the world. (ask any army officer i they would rather do p-company or the AACC all arms comando course)
You also get a lot of ex-paras join the “corps” and say the commando tests are far more arduous than the paras equivelent P-company. (note that very few marines leave and join the paras which says a lot)
Royal Marines are specialised in amphibious operations but amphibiosity is more than about riding in boats and beach assualts. It can be cliff assualts, mountainous terrain (Royal Marines being UK’s and Nato’s Artic warfare and mountain specialists) Helicopter assualts, raiding parties.
Royal Marines are in my opinion the most professional and finest infantry force in the world, equally excellent operating in norway several hundred miles inside the Arctic circle, the jungle, and to the dry dusty heat of Iraq and most importantly afghanistan.
Royal Marines are imphibiously specialised in the same way the Parachute regiment are specialised in parachute drops. The wars of today Afghansitan and Iraq are our absolute bread and butter (royal marines joint amphibious assault/helicopter assault onto the Al Faw peninsular, we were the first into iraq other than SF during the invasion) When was the last time the paras did an operational Parachute drop? The Suez crises way back in the 1950′s!
We are also getting more operational time in afghanistan. We are there every winter (arctic warfare training, afghan is v.cold in the winter, esp in the mountains) The paras are deploying every 2 years.
Your concernes about who are better land soldiers is based on what you know about either force which is probably very little. The Marines are land soldiers the word marine comes from way back in the 1700′s when we were sharpshooters and boarding parties for the royal navy.
Anyway the decision is upto you, look at both forces websites and see which grabs you because there is a fierce but friendly rivaly between the Marines and the Paras so you want to be with who you know in your heart is the best. But I would rather be a Bootneck any day of the week than a Percy Pongo.
