Amazing Survival Stories

I was lucky enough to see an advance copy of "Low Tide" – the last of Victoria Seymour social stories written for the people of Hastings, and I am delighted to say that I think is his best. Its subtitle, 'Hastings in Austerity, 1946-1954' suggests that a sobering reading is ahead and yet, ironically, for people of my generation (I was born in 1960 and grew up in an era of consumerism and high expectations) there is a compelling romance about tales of rations – of a world where personal initiative and community efforts were necessary for survival.
One of the joys of the book is the selection of extracts Frederick Goodsell's work of a newspaper editor, writing under the name 'Vigilante' Hastings is a voice that is still perceptible in circles most conservative of the city today. He comes across, the author suggests, as the combination of Victor Meldrew, Winston Churchill and Mr Pooter. His attitude says, are those of his time and station in life, and a guide for small
values of the city.
I also found laughing something dourly in a quotation from a modern local newspaper reporter who said of "guards" … He believed passionately in Hastings and ensured the Hastings & St Leonards [Observer coverage was profound and significant. You can read their working years later and get a good understanding of the style of city life. Goodsell was one of the last of his race.
My, How times have changed!
And yet, Hastings, like many small coastal towns, still seems to be going round in circles discussing the same topics as the watchmen wrote about – the destination of the clock tower, how much should be spent on the beach front lights and flowers, we are day visitors (and money) or want to be a luxury residential city, etc, etc – but in this lively and fascinating account of the years of austerity, we also see the city wrestling with the inauguration of the health service, the healing of people, buildings and the economy after years of death and devastating destruction, and that despite a seemingly endless list of shortcomings and bureaucratic obstacles caused by the aftermath of war.
The people interviewed for this book speak of the family disputes triggered by resource saving rule that receptions Wedding can only serve 50 people, including women using former RAF maps (printed on pure silk) instead of the sun-tops and bikinis in the shops could not deliver, the girlfriends showing surprising initiative with needles and scissors to dress themselves and their bridesmaids using scraps of lace, old nightgowns, silk parachute – even cardboard and crepe paper colors.
While some elements of Hastings struggled to maintain its charm and respectability, others delight in the escapades Tues 'Mood of the holiday industry development. We meet Donald McGill, whose famous comic (or notorious, vulgar, depending on your point of view) Postcards caused so much controversy in the forties and fifties. How is this material for a trial for obscenity:
Flighty the child in a racecourse bookmaker: "I want to
favorite, please. My girlfriend gave me one pounds do both. "
We also met Knight poster girl Moira (Moira Hornsey later) that, for lying about his age at 14, became an award-winning Belle Bath in 1948 and spent to symbolize all that is fun and daring on the stay on the beach. Moira, he says,
He now lives full time in a flat sea, midway between the sites
of the two pools that were the scenes of his first triumphs
Moira memories of the trials and joys of postwar Hastings and McGill cards make a sharp contrast to memories of death, pain and difficulties relating to former railway workers and service personnel, and notes of caution and care watcher's tastes and former police inspector Charles Banks (who has been called "real life Inspector Foyle), but weaving their stories together, Victoria Seymour has created live tour of the postwar years in Hastings, I almost feel as though I was there.
‘The Slow Turning Tide’ is to be launched in November.
