What is the name of this science fiction novel?

The plot, which I remember: I do not remember the initial setup, but almost to the top of this type, perhaps as part of military training, this guy has to go in survival training. This is done by sending the world through a door. Go with, but separate from, a lot of other "students." He has a sister who says to take only a knife. Anyway, long story short, jumps the door for like 2 weeks survival training and breaks the door. He and the others sent there are trapped on a planet unihabited for 3 years or so. They created their own society kind of thing and pets and other things. The story ends when the doors to get fixed and a group of journalists begin to spin a story of what happened slaughtered for a movie they want to do about it. Thanks! I found it.
