Four Decades In A Leadersip Position My Greatest Discoveries
Four Decades of Being in a Leadership Position Here is my Greatest Discovery
I could write a on this book and will do my best to be brief and to the point. I imagine many of you are thinking that this dude must be ancient. I have been in a leadership position since I was captain of football and baseball teams as a kid but the real challenge started in 1970.
I have served with some of the greatest people this nation has produced from President down to my Squad Leader in Viet-Nam. There are thousands in between and it has been an exemplary journey. I am by no means suggesting that you have to work with people of stature to learn the golden rule of leadership.
Leadership is an art of consistently influencing and obtaining outstanding results under favorable or unfavorable conditions alike. This is a tough job under normal daily circumstances and even tougher when there are unexpected circumstances. A good leader can survive under both of these conditions but it takes a great leader to maintain the course and keep the respect of the team.
Let’s use an example: Your Company has been the leader in the local industry and things have been great. Suddenly there is a new company on the block and they are guaranteeing they will meet and exceed your company’s prices and services. The pressure has been turned up by your Company and District leadership to retain your customers and their loyalty. This is one tough demand but it can be met and exceeded.
OK, how? I am now going to share with you the golden rule to success.
Train and develop your team, instill confidence and pride in their abilities by providing them with outstanding Leadership. If you have done this consistently and they trust your leadership then you will win. You have to know each and everyone of their strengths and weaknesses and have placed them in the positions of their strengths. It doesn’t make any sense to place a person in a position they dislike or have no interest in to prove a point.
Placing them in a position under favorable conditions to increase their knowledge and understanding of the big picture is a great idea but not when times are tough.
The golden rule is to treat your team with respect and dignity. If you like to intimidate or ridicule them then you may survive under normal circumstances but they will abandon you under tough times just like they feel you have abandoned them everyday.
They desire to be held accountable, respected, disciplined and above all to be led by a leader not an ego with a personal goal.
Lead your team; provide them with training and experience that offers them an opportunity for advancement. Let them know that if they follow your lead that you will lead them to a great future. The one thing above all is mean it, they will know and follow you to the end of the world under favorable and unfavorable conditions alike when they believe you sincerely care about them as individuals and as a team.
