Middle Survival

middle survival

As a veteran teacher of middle school, I have seen many students enter middle school without the basic elements of elementary school to learn the multiplication tables, the basic division, and operations with decimals, as well as those related to fractions.

It is essential that students have their "times the tables "to the point that if a student is awakened from a deep sleep and asked," What is 7 x 12? "the immediate response would be" 84. " Without this mathematical automatically, the student is left stranded and alienated, when a problem on the board as "7 x = 84." The student is expected he immediately realized that the missing piece in the puzzle "x" should be "12."

And this ability is just the price of admission to a successful career in middle school mathematics. Somewhere along the line students have become marginalized and alienated from mathematics to the point that – and I'm not kidding – a popular national teachers' magazine found in a survey that a large percentage of middle school students would prefer an appointment with the dentist to make a math homework. C'mon – I've never loved myself and math in seventh grade, but opting for a dentist appointment – WOW!

What we need is for parents to send their children to middle school with the basics already in the trailer. Then the teachers can take control and delivery "goods" as prescribed by state standards. With pressure on educators to "No Child Left Behind," there is little or no recovery time Math. Everything comes to meeting current quality standards in order to succeed in the final year of cumulative state exam. School districts across the country are under intense pressure to meet its annual performance requirements.

The problem remains even if a student with a math major deficiencies is promoted to the next grade. Just start snowballing until the first or second year of high school as a student is on the road to complete abandonment. Parents need to realize they are responsible to equip their children with the necessary skills if its by "the carrot or the stick. I offer small treats and incentives in my classroom for students who show a sincere effort. Notice I did not say well, but the honest effort.

I utilize a wide variety of audio, video and online sources to supplement the standard guided instruction and independent practice. I’ve even written a few math raps about the order of operations and solving basic equations. You can view one of them on my site, http://www.rastamathman.com/.
