Can anyone suggest a good online survival/hiking guide?

I’m writing a book which features a young boy spending almost a year marching across a large number of environments, and I want to have a few moments where reality sets in. So I was wondering if there’s sort of an all purpose survival database somewhere? Anything you can offer would be helpful.
