Bush fires is one of the most common natural disasters experienced in all Australian states. The grass and eucalyptus trees are the vegetation natural spread in Australia. Most regions are very hot during the season, with high wind speeds. The plants contain oil such as eucalyptus, which become hot in a better fuel for a fire. These conditions make Australia vulnerable to bushfires. Some brief notes on major fires in the past in Australia are provided here.

1. The fires in Tasmania in 1967:
On February 7, 1967 the fire has burned several of southern Tasmania in just five hours. That day, alone, 62 people were killed and burned many houses and properties.

2. On Ash Wednesday in 1983:
This happened on Wednesday bushfires February 16, 1983 in Victoria and South Australia. In this fire, several areas in the east and northeast of Melbourne were severely affected. Seventy-five people died and about 2500 houses burned in the fire.

3. The fire in Canberra in 2003:
This fire originated in the Namadgi National Park south of Canberra. Strong winds pushed the Canberra fire in forest areas and acres of surrounding forest and park lands were destroyed in the fire.

4. Kangaroo Island Fires:
These were a series of fires in December 6th 2007 in Kangaroo Island in South Australia. The fire is supposed to be caused by lightning. In this fire 95,000 acres of land were burned.

5. The Bushfire Black Saturday:
This is the last of the bushfires that occurred in Victoria, Australia.A series fire started on Saturday February 7 2009.This caused greater loss of life in a forest fire in Australia. About 173 people died, about 4000 houses and other structures burned, over 450,000 hectares of land destroyed in the fire.

One of the main suspects for causing bush fires is the collision in power lines.Lighning in forest areas contribute otherwise. In addition, several human activities such as reckless burning off farmland sparks of explosives and machinery, the deliberate burning of children and arsonists are other causes of bush fires.

What you should do during a forest fire?
It is very important to take safety measures if you are staying in an area prone to bushfires. In this situation it is important adhere to the warnings and suggestions of the authorities, especially as the total prohibition of fire when it is declared by them. If you hear of a forest fire somewhere place in your area, you need to take a little preparation in advance. You should be prepared to do the following,

 • Monitor climatic conditions
 • Listen to radio and television about the direction of fire.
 • Take care of valuables and articles Emergency and pre pack them
 • Wear protective clothing.
 • Do not leave cooking stoves or burners unattended.
 • Test alarms smoke frequently, if installed.
 • Remove any explosives, chemicals or other burning materials, if kept outside the house.
 • Drink water in case of dehydration.
 • Leave the place along with children and the elderly if they intend to defend the fire.
