Did Charles Darwin have any experiments including evolution, survival and natural selection? What are they?

He did not make experiments himself, not in the sense of setting up a controlled environment and taking notes. Indeed it is a bit of a problem when your ‘lab’ is eight thousand miles across.

But there is another way you can make experiments, and is mentally. Galileo made a ‘mental experiment’ to demonstrate that all bodies fall with the same speed regardless of their mass.

Darwin’s experiments were predictions of the type:

“If birds derive from reptiles, we ought to find a fossil which cannot be classified either as a bird, nor as a reptile.”
“If men evolved from apes, and apes are only found in Africa, the most primitive ancestors of men ought to be found in Africa.”
“If a complex structure such as the eye is the result of successive improvements of a primordial organ, we ought to find organisms still exhibiting intermediate forms of the process.”

When Mendeleev arranged the table of elements, some things didn’t add up. He predicted that the irregularities were due to the existence of gaps in the periodic table due to elements that had not being discovered yet; he predicted what chemical behaviour these elements ought to show and their mass. Within 15 years, the missing elements were duly found.
