Survival Fighting

Why was Churchill cast out by voters after WW2 when he had mobilised the country to fight its survival?

The main reason being that the British populace saw the Conservatives (of which Churchill was currently leader) as the party that had led them into war and consequently wanted a different party to take them through the peace and rebuilding.

They wisely saw that the ideal man for this was Churchill’s deputy in the war coalition government, Clement Atlee, and that Churchill himself was not a peacetime PM (which proved to be quite accurate with his second term in office being particularly poor) and Atlee had the idea of introducing the Welfare State, the NHS (with Aneurin Bevan) and social reform that would change British politics forever. This was exactly what Britain needed after six years of war and deprivation.

Although Churchill is regarded as one of the great British leaders, it is generally believed that Atlee is the best Prime Minister.
