Although you may feel safe and sound in the comfort of our homes, when nature strikes all that can change in an instant. Take the 2004 tsunami, for example. The people on vacation on the coast of Indonesia were safe, as they had always been for all these years, but were swept in just minutes.

Sometimes nature is not entirely to blame. It is also the political climate that gets the better of us and we are facing the brunt of the wrath of nature. The plane crashes, train crashes and shipwrecks are just some of the events that put us at the mercy of nature.

Whatever the situation may be, the unpredictability of the nature can only be matched by men adaptability, and that is where the need to be able to survive outdoors and nature comes into play. And there are several ways one can, at least to start.

The first principle of survival outdoors is the first aid, no doubt. Whether the wound care or caring for a complicated case of infection, first aid is the first line of defense against the immediate damage and to prevent any other undesired results, either by misuse, or nature itself. Taking refuge is a second. Once we are removed from the comforts of our homes, which definitely needs to be adequate shelter safe from the forces of time.

This can be anything, a tent, a cave, under a tree, fallen trees with hollow trunks, or a simple blanket, even to maintain the cold. Next comes food and water, because let's face it, if you're in a situation where nature is imposed on us, will be a time before we were rescued, and it is better to be self-reliant and wait there until rescued instead of having continuously.

These are just some of the elements basic survival and as one learns more, can be adapted more. For example, you can take part in a basic safety course provided by the Red Cross. The course teaches valuable skills such as CPR, which can come in handy in a medical emergency. These skills not only impart knowledge but also give doctors confidence to be self dependent.

You can also invest in a survival kit, a box or bag, with various paraphernalia, such as sleeping bags, knives, medicines, candles, multi-tools, etc, all of which can be used in case an emergency arises.

However, one should always be prepared mentally. Stay calm, stay focused. Even with the best training and equipment on hand going into shock or unstable behavior can change the best of situations Worst. Remember, you can not conquer nature, only to surrender it.

In this day and age is very hard to let go of our camp beds a simple place. We have become creatures of comfort, of losing our side and being incredibly lazy defendant in technology rather than our own intuition and survival skills. And know the basic survival may reach us through the toughest of what nature puts in our way.
