Car Survival Kit; What to Include?

I was wondering what to include in a survival kit to keep in my car. I know a first aid kit is a definate, space blanket, and food. But what else should I include? I’ve seen ones on eBay that are complete and cover the basics to up to a week, but I don’t want to pay $80 + for a emergency kit for my car if I can make one myself cheaper.

Three most important things:

1. Communication: A way of signalling distress (the old mobile phone sounds like a good idea, I might have to implement that). Also, some way of warning passing drivers may well be a good idea.

2. Survival: Depends where, when you are. Blankets/coats, food/water. Fire extinguisher should be included anyway, and like you say, first aid kit.

3. Maintenance: Basic knowledge and equipment for common faults in cars (wheel changes, mud/snow situations etc.).

That lot should hopefully keep you covered.
