Of an astrocytoma is a type of brain tumor or cancer that originates in a type of brain cells known as astrocytes. These cells have a characteristic Star-shaped, leading to its name (in Latin, the word refers to star the star). Some astrocytomas grow at a slow pace, or do not grow significantly for a period of time. Is believed to represent approximately 75% of neuroepithelial tumors of patients.

There are four grades of this tumor, according to the system used by the World Health Organization (WHO), the systems – there are also those who prefer to use. From grade 1 to 4 in order, are: pilocytic, diffuse (or low grade), anaplastic, and glioblastoma multiforme. The rankings are in order of less aggressiveness, for example, pilocytic is considered the least aggressive while the glioblastoma multiforme (grade 4 classification) is considered as the most aggressive.

An astrocytoma can lead to different symptoms in each case. Personality and mental status changes are possible. Issues of Vision, double vision and headaches as well fall into a range of symptoms. In addition, drowsiness and general lethargy may occur.

One of the diagnostic methods that can be used in some cases the computed tomography (known as CT or CAT for short). A biopsy can be taken at a time when the removal of the tumor during surgery attempts, and sometimes simply as its own event.
