Whatever happened to basic survival skills?

I have these kids that come to work for me at the club.
They have never washed a dish, don’t know how to sweep the floor, can’t microwave their own lunch…

How do these kids grow up?
How do their parents expect them to be able to function as adults?

I was taught that if a kid didn’t know how to stich on a button and cook even the simplest of things (toast, scrambled egg…) then their parents didn’t do their job. After all, these are basic survival skills that everyone has to do at least once in their lives no matter if they live in the woods or NYC!
[unless, of course, they have enough money to pay someone else to do it (and, even then, what about the maid's day off?)]

These used to be every day, basic survival skills a parent taught their kids. And, if not the parents, the school.

What happened to basic survival skills?
And how do we get them back?

I ran into the same issues when I was a manager. I can tell you that I am a mother of a seven year old that knows how to do all of the above mentioned things and more. Her five year old sister is learning them now as well. I agree with you that it falls back to the parents. I think it is a generation that grew up with middle class working moms and dads who didn’t have the energy or the desire to go back and teach their kids once they finally got off of work.
Don’t think that there is anything wrong with a Mom working because she has to or because she wants to but I have seen MANY moms and dads for that matter work and then use them working full time as an excuse to not be able to be parents to their kids. Folks chasing that American dream, a large house in the suburbs, two brand new cars and all the fixins to go along with it and the kids paid the price.
Much Peace
