What are the root causes of binary thinking?

Many people tend to choose one of two (and only two) common available sides of an issue. Often these two sides are opposite of each other in many ways. One theory is that it’s derived from survival instinct. A second theory is that it is a by-product of mass media and marketing, in other words a homogeneous group is a much easier marketing target. Many people place a higher emphasis on decisiveness than accuracy, in a sense that, even if both choices are severely flawed, choosing is still better than not choosing.

I would think the root causes of binary thinking are simple, lazy minds. Some anecdotal truisms that come to mind is (1) My mind’s made up, don’t confuse me with facts; (2) A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest; (3) None are so deaf as those who refuse to hear. Mass media and marketing only homes in on the human condition, it does not necessarily create the condition.
