Murder as a Necessity for Survival

There are a lot of people in our world and all of these people are the representatives of different cultures and societies. Every society has its own traits and customs that distinguish it from any other. Each society has its own way of dealing with and considering certain situation. Every society has its own moral code. It is called Cultural Relativism. Cultural Relativism challenges our customary belief in the impartiality and universality of moral truth. In ethics there is no such notion as universal truth; it contains only different cultural codes and nothing more. Furthermore, our own cultural code hasn’t got any special status, it is only one among many others. It is obvious that Cultural relativism is the answer to the question of ethics.

The subject of murder is very likely to be the most common problem believed to be totally wrong. This is not always the case; murder exists in many cultures. The customs of Eskimos are very different from ours. The Eskimos commit infanticide as well as kill the elders. So there appears that in this society there is not much respect for life. We consider these customs inferior to our own. But if we take a closer look, we will understand that these actions are necessary for the survival of the community. The elders are too old for the contribution to the community though they eat up precious food. The men in Eskimo group are valued higher for they are the hunters and providers of food. They kill female infants to keep the males and females ratio equal, for a lot of males die while they are hunting. If they do not kill the female infants the females will be more than males and they won’t have enough food. They do these at first glance horrible things only because they understand that they need to do it unless they want the Eskimos to become extinct.
