My cat seems to fail me in World of Warcraft, is it a bad pet?

I’ve been raped continually on most of the bgs, and I keep dying, I have a cat for a pet. I’m a level 80 night elf hunter survival spec. Do I have the wrong pet for PvP/PvE? What pet should I get and why?

Well in BC i played tauren hunter, and i had a rare spawn elite in winterspring, he was pretty good but as soon as Wrath of the lich king came out I stopped playing my hunter and switched to pally. But i see most High rated hunters using a Crab pet, I suggest trying that out.
