Survival Swimming for WSI?

In WSI class i need to teach “survival swimming” … it is apparently a specific stroke. Not sidestroke, elementary backstroke or using your clothes to float. It is also different form the survival float. Does anyone know what it is? The book’s explanation was really bad and less than a paragraph … it was really no help at all.

i remember the really short explanation, and all the students trying to figure out what it meant. so when my instructor showed us, she floated on her stomach for a long time in between each stroke and kick. the idea was to conserve a lot of energy through an extended glide, but the result was that the whole class was really entertained.

i think she may have done a breaststroke-type kick and a freestyle stroke, but that part isn’t so clear as the part where i was really amused with her dead-man’s float-turned “survival stroke”
