"I learned that was not, as does the majority of Africans, the victim of my circumstances but the master of them." – Legson Kayira

One of the things my Christian faith has taught me is that with God nothing is impossible. I live in a 4 Ps – prayer, planning, perseverance and persistence. Therefore one of the word not in my dictionary is "impossible." Rarely used. Idem words like providence, fate and destiny. All I want to do, do it with regardless of the obstacles by using the 4 Ps.

For me, nothing is impossible if you have a clear goal and vision. The legendary boxer, Muhammad Ali, once said: "Champions are not made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – a desire, a dream, a vision."

Every time I remember the history of Malawi winning Writer, Legson Kayira, inspires me. The events of early life Kayira are legendary: a Tumbuka born and educated in Nyasaland (now is Malawi), walked 3,200 kilometers to North Africa seeking opportunities for higher education.

Like Martin Luther King Jr.., Legson had a dream. I wanted to be like his hero, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th U.S. president, who had risen from poverty to become President, then fought tirelessly to help end slavery. Wanted to be like Booker T. Washington, the largest black educator of the late 19 and early 20th century, to get rid of the shackles of slavery to become a great American reformer and educator, giving hope and dignity to himself and his race. Dream Legson encouraged him on a journey driven by their determination to get an education.

Like these great role models who wanted to serve humanity, to make a difference in the world. And to achieve his goal, he needed an education first. Legson knew the best place to get was in the U.S..

When I was 17 old, seeking the blessing of their parents to go to study in the United States. His illiterate parents did not know where America, but reluctantly gave his blessings.

Their possessions were few: five-day supply of food, a Bible and Pilgrim's Progress, a small ax for protection, and a blanket. Legson anxiously listed on the journey of his life. I was going to walk from his tribal village in Nyasaland, north across the desert of East Africa to Cairo, where he was to board a ship United States to obtain a college education.

After five days of trekking across the rugged terrain of Africa, had covered only Legson 25 miles. He was already out of food, their water was running out, and had no money. To travel more than 2975 miles seemed impossible, but to turn back to give up and forgo a life of poverty and ignorance. Legson addressed his two books, reading the familiar words that renewed their faith in themselves and in their target. Plowing.

In January 1960, fifteen months after he began his perilous journey, he had traveled nearly a thousand miles to Kampala, the Ugandan capital. Was now increasingly strong in body and wiser in the ways of survival. He stayed in Kampala for six months, doing odd jobs and spending every spare moment in the library, reading voraciously.

In the library, in Kampala, went through an illustrated guide to American colleges. A particular example, called him Attention – Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon, Washington. He wrote immediately to the Dean of the school explaining the situation and requested a scholarship. The dean of Skagit was so impressed with the determination of Legson that not only granted him admission but also offered a scholarship and a job that will pay your accommodation and feeding.

Another part of the dream of Legson had fallen into place further obstacles awaited him. Legson needed a passport and a visa, and to obtain a passport, had to provide the government with a date of birth. That's not all. To obtain a visa he needed round-trip fare to the United States. Once again, took his pen and paper and wrote to the missionaries who had taught him since childhood. The missionaries then helped push through passport government channels. However, Legson still lacked the airfare necessary for a visa.

Undeterred, Legson continued his journey to Cairo, believing that somehow get the money needed. He was fortunate when, after hearing his story, students at Skagit Valley College, with the help of local citizens, sent $ 650 to Legson to cover his passage to America.

In December 1960, more than two years after his journey began; Kayira Legson arrived at Skagit Valley College. To take his two treasured books, proudly passed through the entrance to the towers of the institution and began his studies.

But Kayira Legson not stop once he graduated. Continuing his academic career, he became a professor of political science at the University of Cambridge England and a highly respected author. His first book was the autobiographical "I'll try '(1965), and has written four novels:" The looming shadow " (1968), 'Jingala' (1969), 'The civil service' (1971) and "Prisoners" (1974).

As his heroes, Abraham Lincoln and Booker T. Washington, Legson Kayira rose above his humble beginnings and forged their own destiny. He made a difference in the world and became in a magnificent beacon whose light remains as a guide for others to follow.

Legson history shows that with faith, determination, dreams and vision, we achieve something in life and rise to the top.
